Tree Planted Too Deep?

I think my tree is planted too deeply. Is there anything I can do to help?

    Melinda:

This is a difficult problem to fix. Removing soil around the trunk to expose the surface roots may create a sink that collects water. This excess water can lead to root rot.

Manipulating the planting depth on older, established trees could actually cause more problems. Small newly planted trees can be transplanted with the root flare at the surface. Otherwise, do whatever you can to keep the tree healthy. Remove the grass around it and plant ground covers or mulch the soil.
