The Dahlia Brothers
Dazzling Dahlia Bouquet
Bring dahlias' beauty inside with an easy-to-make arrangement. Here are some tips to get you started:
- Cut the blooms in the early morning or evening. Use a sharp knife, and cut the stems at a 45-degree angle.
- Keep blooms fresher longer by submerging ends in warm water immediately after cutting.
- Before arranging, transfer to cold water and trim an inch from the end of each stem while underwater.
Tips to Grow On...
Bedding dahlias are often grown from seed and bloom the first summer. Their tubers can be saved and planted the following year. Larger varieties are usually grown from tubers. Here are some other helpful tips to keep in mind:
- Plant tuberous roots in spring after last frost, placing them 4 inches deep with "eye" pointing up.
- If you want to plant dahlias in a small bed or in a container, choose a low-growing dwarf variety, like those from the 'Dahlietta' series.
- If dahlia leaves turn yellow, it could be from improper watering (too much or too little) or lack of fertilizer.
